A Message from the Mayor

April 2020

Over the past few weeks the world has changed as we knew it and we have adapted to a different life and responded to the challenges of COVID 19.

At the April Ordinary Meeting of Council, Councillors voted unanimously that there be no increase in rates and charges for 2020/21. It is hoped that the decisions made by council will assist those who are struggling financially due to the impact of the virus. Council is also prepared to waive all or part of rates from March 1 for six months. This option will be assessed on an individual basis and actioned if it is considered ‘fair and justifiable’ and will not adversely impact the community. Upon application to the CEO your request to have rates waived for all or part of the 6 months from 1 March will be confidentially assessed by the CEO.
Meetings are currently being held via ZOOM, which is a video communications platform whereby Councillors attend the meetings from their homes. This will be ongoing until we are again able to meet in the chamber.

We wish to thank the community for their patience and resilience over the past few weeks, adapting to a different way of living to increase the safety of everyone.  We also appreciate and thank the business owners for rising to the challenge of social distancing and adapting the way they do business. Phone orders and home deliveries, takeaway food services, extra cleaning and hand sanitiser in businesses has all been greatly appreciated.

So, for now we continue to socially distance and isolate ourselves. If you are struggling in any way due to isolation or you need to talk to someone, please contact your local health provider. Friends are connecting in different ways. ZOOM, Skype, WhatsApp, video phone calls all provide a way of keeping in touch with family and friends. Please contact a friend or neighbour if you’re feeling alone,  and need reassurance and someone to talk to. We can get through this together even though we are apart.
