As we look back at this past financial year, I am proud to highlight the key milestones and successes Barunga West Council has achieved.
In the past 12 months, we've made extraordinary strides in enhancing our community infrastructure and addressing local needs. Projects completed or soon to be completed include upgrades to the Bute and Port Broughton playing courts, stormwater infrastructure in Mundoora, and the rejuvenation of several key community spaces such as the Tickera Foreshore and the Civic Square.
We are proud to announce the successful completion of the Fisherman Bay Freeholding project, a significant milestone facilitated by Council. This achievement marks a major step forward in providing security of tenure for the residents of Fisherman Bay.
We also undertook sand replenishment works on the Port Broughton foreshore, which are crucial for preserving our coastline.
We’re pleased to announce the release of residential land in Port Broughton and Bute, alongside rezoning land near Fisherman Bay. These efforts reflect our proactive approach to addressing the state-wide housing crisis. Civil works in 2024-25 will provide essential infrastructure for residential and industrial properties, facilitating sustainable growth. This includes developments at Grace Harwar Drive and Hornby Road in Port Broughton, as well as eight new allotments in Bute.
The completion of the Port Broughton Civic Square redevelopment will mark a significant achievement after four years of planning. This space, featuring a new water play area, public art by Linda Turner, and upgrades to the War Memorial, will become a central community hub, honouring our heritage and providing a vibrant area for families to enjoy.
Our ability to secure external funding continues to play a pivotal role in supporting these projects. This year, Council secured grants for projects such as the Tickera Historic Well and Nharangga walking trail, public art in the Civic Square, and kerbside recycling services. We are proud to support our community in obtaining an additional $85,298 in grant funding for local initiatives.
As your Mayor, I remain committed to ensuring our community continues to thrive. Together, we have made significant progress, and with your continued support, I am confident we will achieve even more in the coming year.
