Youth Advisory Committees

What is a Youth Advisory Committee?

Youth Advisory Committees (YACs) are a tool to assist Local Councils to meet their community engagement obligations as they relate to young people.

YACs are groups of young people who work in partnership with Local Councils to provide advice on decisions that affect their lives and plan activities and projects that encourage young people’s active engagement in their local communities.

Each YAC is unique and differs depending on their local geography, demographics, social issues as well as the priority and resources allocated to them.

How Council can help:

Did you know, Council can apply for youth funding to support projects identified by local youth?

The purpose of the funding is to build relationships between Council and local young people, and to give them an opportunity to have a say in what they need.

It's a chance to show our youth what Council does and how our processes work, and hopefully inspire local kids to go on and be community leaders themselves one day.

The idea is that young people would identify a project and then work with Council staff to develop a proposal for Council to consider - it's not complicated an staff our here to help!
