Guide for Online Burning-Off Notification system
Prior to lighting up each burn off, Permit holders are required to go to the website (click the link above) and validate their permit and provide details of burn off location and time. Location can be entered in as an address or a “pin” can be dropped on the map to mark location. Locations and times are visible for all Emergency Services and Council’s Authorised Officers to view to assist with Fire Season management.
Notifications to validate a permit can occur from 5.00pm on the day prior to burn off and on the intended day of burning up to 1.00pm and provide a minimum of two (2) hours notice before starting to burn.
Burning Off/Permits
The Barunga West Council Bushfire Prevention Committee recently changed the commencement date of Schedule 9 Permits under the Fire and Emergency Services Act, 2005 for burning of stubble to 15 March 2024.
As in previous years, only one permit per landholder will be issued and will last for the entire period of the Fire Danger Season.

Where internet access is unavailable, the permit holder may contact Council who will validate your permit on-line.
Permits must be carried by the permit holder at all times whilst burning, and they must be in attendance of the burn, permits cannot be transferred to other parties.
Burning notifications are verified online utilising the burn-off notifications through Council’s website.

Conditions for Burning Permits
- “Burning Off” Conditions –
(a) This Permit MUST be issued to the person who intends to conduct the burning, and this person MUST be on site at all times the burning is being conducted.
(b) A copy of this permit MUST be on the site at all times and must be produced immediately should an Authorised Officer request it.
(c) Where a permit is issued for longer than a 24 hour period, the permit holder MUST notify via the on-line notification system AND provide a minimum of 2 hours notice before starting to burn. For On-line notification and validation go to: https://barungawest.sa.fires.elementorg.com/
Where internet access is unavailable, the permit holder may contact Council who will validate your permit on-line.
(d) The land immediately around the relevant land must be cleared of all flammable material to a distance of at least four metres.
(e) A minimum of THREE (3) persons, a fire unit with a minimum of 400L of water, operational motor and pump and hoses must be in attendance.
(f) Burning off is permitted during daylight hours Monday to Friday. Burning off is NOT permitted on Saturdays, Sundays or Public Holidays.
(g) NO BURNING shall be conducted once the sun has set (after dark).
(h) Permit holders must notify adjoining landowners prior to burning.
(i) Permits are to be issued at the discretion of the Authorised Officers who have a right to refuse permits.
(j) The Permit Holder is exempt from notifying Council and CFS when utilising the On-line Notification system.
- “Fire Harrowing” Burning Conditions-
- A genuine attempt must be made to previously burn the land.
- At least ONE (1) responsible, able-bodied person to be in attendance from the time the fire is lit until it is extinguished and 400L of water and operational motor, pump and hoses must be in attendance.
- All other adopted conditions for “Burning Off” still apply except condition (1e).
- The Permit Holder is exempt from notifying CFS when utilising the On-line Notification system.
Where internet access is unavailable, the permit holder may contact Council who will validate you permit on-line.
- “Windrowing” Burning Conditions
(a) This Permit MUST be issued to the person who intends to conduct the burning, and this person MUST be on site at all times the burning is being conducted.
(b) A copy of this permit MUST be on the site at all times and must be produced immediately should an Authorised Officer request it.
(c) Where a permit is issued for longer than a 24 hour period, the permit holder MUST notify via the on-line notification system AND provide a minimum of 2 hours notice before starting to burn. For On-line notification and validation go to: https://barungawest.sa.fires.elementorg.com/

(d) At least ONE (1) responsible, able-bodied person to be in attendance from the time the fire is lit until it is extinguished, 400L of water and operational motor and pump and hoses must be in attendance.
(e) All other adopted conditions for “Burning Off” still apply except condition (1e).
(f) The Permit Holder is exempt from notifying Council and CFS when utilising the On-line Notification system.
- “Chaff Pile” Burning Conditions
- No burning of Chaff Piles until the 14th March annually.
- The piles must be contained within a 20 metre burnt/cleared area around the pile with a 4 metre ploughed break around the outside of the burnt/cleared area.
- A minimum of 1000 litres of water on hand and to remain in the location for a further 24 hour period after the completion of the burn off or until the area is ploughed.
- No Chaff Piles to be burnt within 25m of a boundary fence.
- No burning of the chaff piles when prevailing winds will create a hazard to road users and or townships or settlements as a result of smoke.
- The fire ground must be rechecked within 6 hours of completion of the burn off and again within 24 hours.
- All other adopted conditions for “Burning off” still apply.
- The Permit Holder is exempt from notifying Council or CFS when utilising the On-line Notification system. Where internet access is unavailable, the permit holder may contact Council who will validate you permit on-line.
PLEASE REMEMBER:
It is the RESPONSIBILITY of the Permit Holder to make the required NOTIFICATION’S of their intention to burn; as per the conditions outlined on the back of the permit

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH ANY PERMIT CONDITION MAY RESULT IN THE PERMIT BEING REVOKED AND A $315 EXPIATION NOTICE MAY BE ISSUED.
