Are you a skilled crab wrangler or novice angler in search of family fun?
The crabs are running and the competition to nab the best blueys will be fierce.
Yorke Peninsula’s Biggest Blue Crab competition will be launched by Barunga West Council on 21 December 2022.
This promotion embraces Instagram as the digital entry medium and encourages participants to share their catches and tag the Top of the Yorke Instagram social media page.
Leonie Kerley, Mayor of Barunga West Council, said the crabbing competition was a fun way to promote and celebrate the region’s recreational fishing attractions which had taken a hit from a Snapper fishing ban introduced in November 2019.
The Top of the Yorke website has a comprehensive guide to assist novice anglers on ways to participate in the fun family activity of crabbing on Yorke Peninsula. The guide gives handy pointers on equipment, times, techniques and regulations that relate to crabbing for Blue Swimmer Crabs.
“Blue Swimmer Crabs are a local favourite, abundant in waters of the Spencer Gulf, and crabbing provides fun for the whole family,” Mrs Kerley said.
“It was an easy decision to champion the Blue Swimmer Crab and highlight the recreational fishing opportunities at the Top of the Yorke.”
To participate in the promotion recreational anglers need to catch a Blue Swimmer Crab in local waters, measure their crab from claw to claw on the Top of the Yorke measuring podiums and upload pictures to Instagram while tagging the Top of the Yorke Instagram page.

“The prizes on offer for #yorkepeninsulasbiggestbluecrab have been generously donated by the local business community,” Mrs Kerley said.
“Prizes include vouchers for accommodation, cafés, pub and the hardware store. This prize really represents the ultimate Top of the Yorke weekend away.
“This summer get out and experience the family fun of crabbing in the Top of the Yorke, by raking at Tickera or pulling nets out in the boat off the coast of Port Broughton. Good luck in catching the Yorke Peninsula’s biggest Blue Swimmer Crab.”
