Thousands flock to Port Broughton

Port Broughton has come alive with festivities, shopping, art, food and fun during the Labour Day long weekend.

More than 2000 people enjoyed perfect spring weather as the Top of the Yorke turned out to enjoy a range of family-friendly activities and events.

The return of Barunga West Council’s popular Seaside Markets saw the Port Broughton Foreshore buzzing on Sunday, October 2 as thousands came out to browse the 55 stalls offering an eclectic selection of food, jewellery, clothes, arts and craft. Great food, coffee and ample space for dogs and children to play made it an amazing day all round.

The northern end of the foreshore on Sunday was filled with the thrills and spills of Port Broughton’s very own “race day in the bay”.

The annual Rubber Duck Race – the major fundraiser for the Port Broughton Sailing & Boat Club – was in full swing from 11am on Sunday and included free goody bags, a duck fashion parade and fun family games such as duck and spoon, running duck and duck-on-head races.

The main event saw numbered plastic ducks launched into Port Broughton Bay after midday, with 10 prize places awarded.

The action continued indoors all weekend too with the opening of the Lonesome Savage Art Exhibition on Saturday, October 1 at Port Broughton’s Gallery 1871.

Presented by Jessica Hewett Curating, the joint exhibition showcases the stunning works of Debbie Savage and Michele Charvetto of Lonesome Valley Studio, and runs until October 8.

A long weekend highlight was the sold-out children’s art class with Savage on Monday, October 3 where budding artists aged 4-12 got some tips from a professional while indulging in some yummy snacks.

Maree Wauchope, Chief Executive Officer, of Barunga West Council said she was overjoyed to see the Top of the Yorke come to life.

“It was truly a joy to see visitors and locals come together to enjoy the sense of community and serenity that our region has to offer,” Ms Wauchope said.

“It is wonderful to see the hard work of our council staff, community groups and local businesses pay off with such great events that bring so many visitors to Port Broughton and the wider Top of the Yorke region.”
