With a two-day program of competitions and activities at Broughton Skate Park supported by Barunga West Council.
The event was last held in Port Broughton in January 2021, attracting more than 250 spectators. More than four years later, it is making a much-anticipated return.
The event is being delivered by YMCA Action Sports with funding from the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, alongside in-kind assistance from Council.
- Saturday, 1 November will feature a Learn to Skate session from 10am to 12pm, where experienced coaches will provide a fun and supportive introduction to skateboarding. A creative workshop will also give participants the chance to design and paint their own skateboard decks.
- On Sunday, 2 November, the Skate Park Leagues competition will run from 11am to 4pm, bringing together competitors on scooters, BMX bikes and skateboards. Medals will be awarded to first, second and third places, with additional prize raffles to encourage participation across all abilities. Points will also count towards the South Australian Regional Series League Ladders, which accumulate across the year to decide the best competitors of 2025.
Barunga West Mayor Leonie Kerley said the return of the event highlights Council’s commitment to providing positive opportunities for young people.
“Council is excited to again partner in supporting this popular event for our community,” Mayor Kerley said. “Skate Park Leagues are about much more than competition. They bring people of all ages together in a positive, supportive environment. The first weekend in November will be a chance for families to enjoy a great community event while celebrating the creativity and talent of our local young people.”
Barunga West CEO Maree Wauchope said the event reflected Council’s focus on active and inclusive communities.
“This program not only gives young people the chance to showcase their skills, but also provides a welcoming space to try something new, build confidence, and be part of a national grassroots series,” Ms Wauchope said. “Council is very pleased to work alongside YMCA Action Sports to make this event possible in Port Broughton.”
Matthew Brett, Manager of YMCA Action Sports, said the program continues to highlight the importance of skate park culture.
“Skate Park Leagues give people of all walks of life the opportunity to come together and use the Council’s facility in a positive and meaningful way. The inclusion and support we see at each event is amazing and a testament to the skate park communities,” Mr Brett said.
The Skate Park Leagues has grown into Australia’s largest grassroots skateboarding, scooter and BMX series since its launch in 2007, staging more than 100 events nationwide each year.
