This funding boost, from the Government of South Australia’s Office for Autism, will enhance the experience for children with autism and sensory processing disorders, ensuring they can fully enjoy the magic of Christmas in a calm and welcoming environment.
Barunga West Mayor Leonie Kerley said: “This grant is a significant step forward in our commitment to inclusivity. It allows us to create a sensory-friendly Santa experience where every child can have a magical and memorable holiday moment, regardless of their sensory needs.”
The Sensory Santa initiative, launched by Barunga West Council in Port Broughton in 2022, provides special sessions in a serene setting free from the usual noise and crowds. These sessions are designed to cater to the needs of children who find traditional holiday environments overwhelming. With the new funding, the program will expand to accommodate three times as many families, benefiting an additional 30 children.
Key enhancements include the addition of soft, sensory-friendly decorations, a predictable and calm atmosphere, and a designated “Calm Cave” area, where children can take a break if needed. These improvements will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all participants this Christmas and beyond.
This year’s Santa’s Cave will run from 16 to 24 December (closed 21 and 22 December) in Port Broughton. A Sensory Santa session will be held on 17 December from 10am to 1pm. Bookings are essential via email at: barunga@barungawest.sa.gov.au.
The initiative has garnered widespread community support and has been praised for its inclusivity. In 2023, Emily Bourke MLC, Australia’s first Assistant Minister for Autism, attended a Sensory Santa session, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in regional areas.
Ms Bourke, who was born and raised on a farm near Maitland on the Yorke Peninsula, said: “The Government of South Australia is committed to building knowledge, understanding, and connection and belonging for Autistic people and autism communities. Your commitment to activities which will achieve this strengthens our community.”
