Barunga West Council is progressing detailed concept designs for Port Broughton’s main street, between Harvey Street and West Terrace, with the aim of improving safety, accessibility and amenity while strengthening connections between the town centre, the foreshore and surrounding services.
Council has engaged regional landscape architecture studio LINEA to lead the consultation and final design phase for Bay Street, building on earlier planning studies and concept work and preparing the project for future external funding opportunities.
A community survey launched today will remain open for four weeks. Feedback can be provided online or via a paper survey available from the Council office.
The consultation and design process is structured around three key stages:
- Reflect and Revisit: Completed in mid-2025, this stage involved reviewing existing design options and feasibility with Council, engineering consultants and key stakeholders, including Bay Street traders.
- Refine and Consult: The current stage which involves incorporating early feedback, refining landscape and engineering elements and undertaking broader community consultation through surveys and in-person sessions.
- Finalise and Proceed: By June 2026, the final design package and high-level costings are expected to be completed for Council endorsement, enabling applications for external grant funding to proceed.
The Bay Street Upgrade aims to address a range of long-standing issues identified through previous consultation, including pedestrian safety, accessibility, ageing infrastructure, drainage and traffic movement, while retaining Bay Street’s role as a functional main street for local businesses and services.
Parking is expected to remain predominantly angled parking, with only minimal changes where required to meet current standards and improve accessibility.
Design decisions will be guided by Australian standards, budget considerations and existing infrastructure constraints, while allowing flexibility in areas such as materials, landscaping and streetscape features to reflect Port Broughton’s character.
Council has emphasised that the current phase is design-focused only. No construction will begin unless external grant funding is secured.
This stage of the project is funded through a State Government Planning and Development Fund grant, supporting the development of “shovel-ready” designs that can be used to pursue future funding opportunities.
Residents, traders and visitors are encouraged to review the draft concepts and complete the survey to help shape the final design. The survey closes at 5pm on 18 March 2026.
