The funding will match the Council’s own financial commitment to these initiatives, which are considered critical for the community.
The State Government’s funding will support the revitalisation of Port Broughton’s Civic Square, a project that has garnered significant community interest since consultations began in March 2022. Works on the transformative community project started in August 2023. Extensive feedback from the community has shaped the design and scope of the Civic Square project.
Key Features of the Civic Square Revitalisation:
- Flag Display and Memorial Space: The design includes flying the South Australian and Aboriginal flags alongside the Australian flag, respecting the region’s cultural and historical significance.
- Landscaping: The area will be landscaped with native and coastal drought-tolerant plants to ensure sustainability.
- Public Art: The square will feature murals, carvings, and sculptures, including symbols and totems to acknowledge the Narungga people and their traditional lands. Narungga language will also be incorporated.
- Interactive Play Areas: Safe and engaging play spaces for children, including a 'blue space' with water jets and lights designed for both play and ceremonial uses.
- Amenities: The square will provide ample seating, along with green spaces for comfort and accessibility.
Main Street Upgrade
In addition to the Civic Square, Barunga West Council is progressing with the development of construction drawings for the next stage of the Main Street upgrade for Bay Street, Port Broughton. This project aims to improve the main thoroughfare and enhance the streetscape.

I was pleased to formally support the Civic Square project during the funding process, and securing this major funding is just reward for the proactive efforts of the parochial Port Broughton community and Barunga West Council.
I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product and its addition to the beachfront vista. I’m sure it will be an asset also enjoyed by the community and its ever-increasing numbers of tourists visiting Port Broughton.
