Port Broughton Powers Up with the RAA

In a significant move towards expanding electric vehicle infrastructure in regional South Australia, Barunga West Council has given the nod to upgrade its existing Tesla electric vehicle (EV) chargers with new stations managed by the Royal Automobile Association (RAA).

Currently, two Tesla-branded chargers stand on Harvey Street, next to the Council's Port Broughton office. While the units were provided free by Tesla, their installation was overseen by Council. Initially designed only to accommodate Tesla vehicles, other EVs have since found a way to recharge there, thanks to available market adapters.

However, these charging points have not been without issues, recently facing technical challenges that need repairs, and that would need to be funded from Council’s operational budget. Council foots the electricity bill for the Tesla charging stations, with the average estimated cost for a full recharge approximately $25.

Under the RAA's proposal, their replacement chargers will cater to all types of EVs and come with an assurance that the RAA will shoulder all maintenance and operational responsibilities. The most notable change is that users will now bear the cost of charging, resulting in some savings for ratepayers.

Council staff will now proceed with the proposal from the RAA and the Top of the Yorke will join the RAA’s state-wide charging network.
The RAA is rolling out charging stations across South Australia, with regional charging points a priority, despite challenges to the electricity grid. The State Government has provided a $12.35 million grant for the RAA to construct and operate the state’s EV charging network.

In July, the State Government said that of the 140 charging stations across the network, about 75 per cent are to be located in regional towns along highways, in tourism hotspots and at popular holiday accommodation sites. The RAA has currently completed over 25 per cent of the network. More than 530 charging points at the 140 stations are due to be installed across SA by early 2024.

“The collaboration between Barunga West Council and the RAA appears to be a win-win, encouraging EV drivers to stop in Port Broughton and alleviating financial pressures on ratepayers,” said Barunga West Council’s Mayor Leonie Kerley.
