A new small business bringing fresh recreational opportunities to Port Broughton this school holiday season.
The new hire business, operated by the team behind Port Broughton IGA, offers pedal boats and kayaks for short sessions and has opened just in time for the April school holidays and Easter long weekend.
Council has assisted in the launch of the venture by working closely with the business to ensure all requirements were met, helping promote the service, and approving the hire station’s central location near the West Terrace kayak ramp.
Mayor Leonie Kerley said the project was a great example of how Council can work hand-in-hand with local businesses to boost tourism and provide more recreational opportunities.
“This is about creating experiences that are affordable, family-friendly and showcase the natural beauty of Port Broughton. Council is proud to support initiatives like this that add value to our visitor economy and our local way of life,” Mayor Kerley said.
Interim CEO Paul Simpson said the business was a smart and timely addition to the town’s offering ahead of a busy Easter period.
“This is exactly the kind of low-impact, high-enjoyment activity that works so well in coastal communities like ours,” Mr Simpson said. “It adds to the appeal of our town and gives families one more reason to stay longer and explore more.”
The April school holiday period will serve as a trial phase for the business, with Council monitoring its operation and location to ensure smooth traffic flow and visitor accessibility.
The launch coincides with two major events over Easter that are expected to draw strong crowds to the foreshore.
Feast on the Foreshore will take over Port Broughton on Good Friday from 3pm to 8pm with food vans, live music, and free family entertainment. The event promises a relaxed, coastal atmosphere perfect for holidaymakers and locals to come together and enjoy the best of the region’s hospitality.
“This is a Connecting Communities Event sponsored by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions under the Family and Business Support Program.”
Seaside Markets on Easter Saturday from 10am to 2pm will feature dozens of stalls showcasing handmade goods, artisan products, and coastal treats. The markets offer a chance for visitors to browse, shop, and support local creators, all while enjoying the sea breeze and laid-back charm of the Port Broughton waterfront.
“We’re expecting a strong turnout over Easter, and these events, combined with the new watercraft hire, add to the vibrancy of our town,” Mayor Kerley said.
Council encourages residents and visitors to head down to the foreshore, try the pedal boats or kayaks, and soak up the local atmosphere.
