Nominations are now open across three categories of Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (16–30 years), and Community Event of the Year. Forms are available on Council’s website and at both the Bute and Port Broughton offices.
Barunga West Mayor Leonie Kerley encouraged residents to get involved and put forward deserving community members or groups.
“The Citizen of the Year Awards are our way of recognising people who go above and beyond to make Barunga West a better place,” Mayor Kerley said.
“Every year, we see remarkable individuals and events that strengthen our community spirit, and these awards are an important opportunity to thank them publicly.”
Nominations close on Sunday, 16 November 2025, with eligible submissions to be considered by Council at its December meeting. Recipients will be recognised at the Barunga West Australia Day Breakfast on Monday, 26 January 2026, at the Port Broughton Foreshore.
Catering for the breakfast will again be provided by the Fisherman Bay Progress Association, with future opportunities rotated among community groups as a valued fundraising activity.
Council has also applied for the 2026 Australia Day Community Grant, which, if successful, will help fund the breakfast celebration and contribute to new community infrastructure for shared use. Similar grants in 2022 and 2023 provided $20,000 to support the event and purchase marquees and trestle tables now available to local groups.
Mayor Kerley said elected members were playing an active role in encouraging nominations and helping deliver the community celebration.
“Our councillors are often the first to see the positive impact that volunteers and community organisations make,” she said.
“We’re asking everyone to spread the word and help us celebrate those who make our region such a special place to live.”
Nominees must be Australian citizens who live, work, or study in the Barunga West Council area. Self-nominations and nominations by immediate family members are not accepted.
