Mayor Kerley, first elected in 2000 and now in her seventh year as Mayor, accepted the recognition at the recent LGA event marking long-serving elected members across the state.
Her quarter-century contribution spans major community, infrastructure and economic development projects that have shaped Barunga West’s transformation, including the Bute Silo Art installation, the redevelopment of the Port Broughton Civic Square, Fisherman Bay freeholding, and the release of new residential and industrial land. She has also championed initiatives such as the Barunga West Art Gallery, the annual Show ’n’ Shine event, and the ANZAC Day Poppy Field display.
Mayor Kerley said the recognition prompted a moment of reflection.
“As we move into this next chapter for Council, I have taken a moment to reflect on my 25 years of service to the Barunga West Council,” she said.
“It has been an honour and privilege to serve our community over this period and to witness the many positive changes, challenges, and achievements that have shaped our region. I am proud of the progress we have made together and remain committed to ensuring that Barunga West continues to thrive as a strong, connected, and forward-looking community.
“I extend my thanks to my fellow Elected Members, council staff, and our community for their continued support, collaboration, and dedication to making Barunga West a great place to live, work, and invest.”
A lifelong resident of Yorke Peninsula, Mayor Kerley’s path into public life began in 1999 when she attended a council meeting to present a community petition.
This experience prompted her to stand for election the following year. She has served through periods of reform, economic change and growth, and has been re-elected by her peers as Mayor, most recently in 2024.
Known for her collaborative style, strong work ethic and deep knowledge of local history, she has been a consistent advocate for sustainable development, improved road infrastructure, environmental stewardship and greater representation of women in local government.
Barunga West Council Acting CEO Tamara Harrison said the award is a fitting acknowledgment of long service to the community.
“Twenty-five years in any field is a significant achievement, but serving continuously at the local government level, which is often the closest tier to the community, speaks to Leonie’s commitment, character and leadership. Her contribution has shaped much of what Barunga West residents value today.”
The LGA’s Elected Member Service Awards recognise those who have contributed 20 years or more to local government. Certificates and badges are presented at official LGA events following the completion of the relevant service milestone.
Mayor Kerley and her husband Ned reside in Port Broughton, remaining active contributors to community life.
