The funding, announced by the State Government on November 26, comes after Mayor Kerley successfully pushed for urgent financial assistance at last month’s Northern and Yorke Local Government Association (NYLGA) meeting in Kadina. The Mayor’s motion, which received unanimous support from all 15 member councils, highlighted the devastating impacts of drought and called for immediate intervention.
“This is a significant win for our farmers and regional communities,” Mayor Kerley said. “The State Government’s $18 million package will provide much-needed relief at a time when drought conditions are putting immense pressure on families, businesses, and livelihoods.”
The drought relief package, managed by the Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA), will deliver targeted support to affected farmers, including:
- Financial grants for infrastructure projects to improve water security.
- Mental health and well-being services for farming families.
- Support for businesses reliant on agriculture to sustain local economies.
Mayor Kerley’s advocacy has been a driving force in securing this outcome. Her leadership in bringing regional councils together and amplifying the voices of drought-affected communities has ensured the State Government acted swiftly.
“Our farmers are the backbone of this region, and this funding will provide critical assistance to help them manage through these dry conditions,” Mayor Kerley said.
“I’m proud to have been part of a collective effort that highlights the importance of supporting rural communities when they need it most.”
The announcement follows key discussions at the Mid North Dry Conditions Round Table in Jamestown, where stakeholders, including PIRSA, local councils, and agricultural groups, examined the challenges facing farming families. Issues such as food insecurity, rising input costs, and the mental health impacts of drought were central to these conversations.
“This funding is not just about farms — it’s about protecting entire communities,” Mayor Kerley said. “When our farmers succeed, our businesses, schools, and towns thrive. This outcome is a testament to what can be achieved when local voices are heard.”
Barunga West Council will continue working closely with PIRSA and regional partners to ensure the funding reaches those who need it most.
