The two-year extension, commencing 1 July 2026, follows the association’s completion of its initial commitments under the existing lease agreement and the demonstrated growth in community use of the facility.
Barunga West Mayor Leonie Kerley said the extension was a reflection of Council’s confidence in the local committee’s management of the site and the positive role it continues to play in the Bute community.
“Council is pleased to see this facility once again being used actively and maintained through community effort,” Mayor Kerley said.
“The Bute 2000 Onwards Progress Association has shown real initiative in reactivating the Rest Centre, attracting new activities, and ensuring the building remains a valued space for everyone in the local community.”
The Bute Rest Centre, built in the 1950s and owned by Council, had been under review in 2023 as part of broader discussions about the sustainability of community buildings in the township.
A survey and public meeting confirmed strong local support for retaining the building as a community space.
In response, Council granted a two-year lease to the Progress Association in 2024, allowing the group to take on responsibility for insurance, maintenance and operational costs. Since then, the association has delivered on its commitments and secured grant funding to further improve the facility.
Under the leadership of Bute 2000 Onwards Progress Association Chairperson Imenka Gill and other committee members, the centre had become a focal point for local events, social activities and community programs.
The association should be proud of what’s been achieved, with the Rest Centre again being used by people of all ages for gatherings, workshops and meetings, Mayor Kerley said.
“It’s rewarding to see the community come together to make the most of the space,” she said.
The lease extension provides certainty for the group to continue its work until 30 June 2028, while ensuring the building remains a Council-owned community asset.
