The Oval irrigation upgrade is integral to the connection of Fisherman Bay to the Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS) in Port Broughton.
Barunga West Council, which last year successfully applied to the Local Government Association’s CWMS Subsidy Funding Agreement program, will undertake the irrigation upgrade with assistance of volunteers from the Port Broughton Community Sports Club.
Maree Wauchope, Chief Executive, of Barunga West Council said the irrigation upgrade was a key part of a significant development for the region.
“This particular project is to cater for the connection of Fisherman Bay to the treatment plant and as a result requires a workable irrigation system for the disposal of the treated wastewater,” Ms Wauchope said.
“This is the beginning of exciting times ahead as it will be a catalyst for considerable development. The Oval’s irrigation is integral to the use of wastewater from our CWMS scheme in Port Broughton.
“The upgrade at Port Broughton Oval will replace ageing infrastructure that does not work as a result of blockages and will ensure Council meets its SA Health obligations for the ongoing disposal of treated wastewater in a sustainable manner.”
The irrigation upgrade is not expected to impact the summer tennis season. Some cricket matches may need to be moved to other venues.
Once works begin from 4 September 2022, there will be open trenches around the Oval and Skate Park and people should take note of signage and be careful when in the area.
The irrigation pump station will also be upgraded with the installation of a new tank. There will be restricted vehicle and pedestrian access around the Oval, and the Skate Park will be temporarily closed.
Updates on public access and progress of works will be provided via the Barunga West Council Facebook page.
