The petition was initially kick-started by the City of Victor Harbor. Barunga West Council is one of 16 other regional councils from across South Australia supporting the initiative.
Specifically, the petition calls on the South Australian Government to waive stamp duty on the purchase of existing homes (up to $750,000) for first homebuyers in regional areas.
Councils are aiming to achieve a collective 10,000 signatures before presenting the petition to Parliament.
Why advocate for stamp duty reform
Regional communities rely on people working locally in roles such as nurses and doctors; aged care and disability workers; teachers and childcare educators; trades and construction workers; hospitality and retail staff; and small business owners and entrepreneurs. These workers keep regional towns running by staffing essential services, supporting older residents, and contributing to a vibrant community.
Housing and stamp duty policy is one way to achieve balance and work to maintain a healthy mix of generations so we can keep a strong local workforce, and remain vibrant, resilient and economically strong into the future.
High upfront costs, including stamp duty, remain a significant barrier for first homebuyers in regional communities. By easing this financial burden, the petition aims to help more people and families put down roots locally to support a balanced mix of generations, strengthen the workforce, and helping keep essential services and local businesses sustainable.
