Have your say on rezoning proposal – Fisherman Bay

Published 13th August 2024
A proposal to rezone underutilised land into residential land, which would accommodate approximately 266 additional houses near the existing Fisherman Bay settlement, is now open for public consultation.

The Code Amendment, which outlines the rezoning proposal, along with reports covering various aspects of the proposal, including environmental information, traffic studies, and infrastructure capacity evaluations, can be viewed on the Plan SA portal.

Maree Wauchope, CEO of Barunga West Council, said the housing crisis in the Barunga West Council area can be partly attributed to a shortage of residential land, and this proposal to rezone a portion of the land is one measure that will assist in addressing this issue.

"This rezoning proposal is just one of several strategies that the Council has adopted to address the housing crisis.

“Other initiatives include approving private subdivisions, purchasing and developing land at Grace Harwar Drive in Port Broughton, offering council rate rebates for first home buyers, and developing council-owned land at Bute," Ms Wauchope said.

This rezoning proposal follows the successful completion of over $23 million in infrastructure improvements, including wastewater, stormwater, roads, and coastal protection works, which facilitated the freeholding of the Fisherman Bay township—a site that had been a leasehold shack settlement since the 1960s.

You can view the proposal and all reports, and have your say via the Plan SA website (www.plan.sa.gov.au), by emailing barunga@barungawest.sa.gov.au, or by post to:
