During her recent tour to the Yorke Peninsula, showcasing the community spirit and vibrant cultural heritage of Port Broughton and Bute.
Accompanied by her husband, Rod Bunten, Her Excellency spent time connecting with residents, local leaders, and volunteers, gaining a deeper understanding of the region’s unique character and community initiatives.
A highlight of the visit was the engagement at Port Broughton Area School, where Her Excellency and Mr Bunten spoke with staff and students about leadership, educational aspirations, and opportunities for young people.
"It was truly inspiring for our young people to interact directly with Her Excellency and discuss their futures," said Barunga West Council Mayor Leonie Kerley. "Such experiences can have a lasting positive impact on their aspirations and community involvement."
The Governor also visited Barunga Village, observing the strong sense of community and quality of life enjoyed by local retirees. At the Port Broughton Visitor Information Centre, Her Excellency met dedicated volunteers who serve as ambassadors for the region, and explored Gallery 1871, a thriving local hub for artists.
Interim CEO Paul Simpson said it was important to be able to showcase local initiatives directly to the Governor.
“The visit provided an excellent opportunity to highlight our community-driven projects and the dedication of local volunteers. It underscores the important role our council plays in supporting cultural and community development,” Mr Simpson said.
Her Excellency’s itinerary included a tour of the Port Broughton Jetty and Civic Square Development, where she was welcomed by Michael Wanganeen, Chair of the Nharangga Aboriginal Progress Association.
Mr Wanganeen presented insights into the Nharangga Totem Art by artist Linda Turner, a symbol celebrating local Indigenous heritage and identity. Plans for the Wawi Buldu Walk, showcasing native foods and Nharangga traditions, were also shared.
The Governor’s visit concluded at the striking Bute Silo Art, a collaborative community project capturing significant local narratives through a vibrant mural that has been recognised nationally and become a tourist attraction.
"We are grateful to Her Excellency and Mr Bunten for their genuine interest and enthusiasm for our communities," Mayor Kerley said.
“Their visit not only recognises but also strengthens the pride and community spirit we share in Barunga West."
Her Excellency thanked the Barunga West Council and the communities of Port Broughton and Bute for the warm welcome and memorable experiences.
