Funding boost for wastewater project

The Local Government Association has approved a $155,000 funding boost for the finishing touches to an expanded Community Wastewater Management System in Port Broughton.

The additional funding, formally approved by the LGA Board at its meeting last month, covers variations to the construction of Port Broughton’s wastewater treatment plant, bringing the total subsidy agreement to $3.155 million.

This comes as the expansion project reaches practical completion.

Works on the expansion project, which began a year ago, have included construction of a new storage lagoon, two concrete treatment tanks, and a 3km rising main connecting Fisherman Bay residents to the upgraded treatment plant.

The expansion was necessary as the existing Port Broughton plant was near capacity and required upgrading to accommodate future development.

Barunga West Council Mayor Leonie Kerley said the expansion project was a key aspect of allowing the freeholding of 400 properties at Fisherman Bay, as they required connection to wastewater treatment as part of development approval.

“The project not only provides these properties with essential wastewater treatment but also offers additional reclaimed water for use by the Port Broughton Golf Club and town oval, providing an added benefit to local ratepayers,” Mayor Kerley said.

“The Port Broughton Community Wastewater Management System expansion project is a crucial step in ensuring the sustainability and growth of the Port Broughton area for years to come. Our community is grateful for the support shown by stakeholders, including the Local Government Association.”
