Fisherman Bay project on track

Major infrastructure works at Fisherman Bay are progressing as planned three months after South Australian civil construction company Bardavcol broke ground on the $20 million project.

Work is well underway to build coastal protection measures, whilst the rising main to connect Fisherman Bay to the Port Broughton Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS) has been installed.

Construction of an earth revetment wall and a stormwater outlet along the eastern side of Fisherman Bay is now complete and stormwater basins have been built on farming land adjacent to Fisherman Bay.

Preparatory works to build sand and rock revetment walls along Whiting Road are well progressed and work is underway to replace and relocate sections of water pipes to make way for the sewer network.

In June, Fisherman Bay Management and Barunga West Council commemorated the start of more than $20 million of critical infrastructure works at Fisherman Bay.

The significant investment includes road infrastructure, stormwater and coastal protection measures as well as connection for the township to an improved and extended Port Broughton Community Wastewater Treatment System.

As of 1 September 2022, there were 162 sites out of a total of 403 at Fisherman Bay that had been converted to freehold title. The remaining sites under sales contracts will be settled by the end of January 2023.

Maree Wauchope, Chief Executive, of Barunga West Council said the project represented a significant development for the region.

“After decades of uncertainty, the largest investment ever seen in one of South Australia’s most iconic shack communities will shape the future of Fisherman Bay, providing certainty for residents and generating lasting benefits for the wider Top of the Yorke region,” Ms Wauchope said.

“The infrastructure works are due for completion by July 2023, with work to install the sewer network and pump stations scheduled to start next month. Council is very happy with the progress of the project to date.”
