Edmund Street Upgrade Successfully Completed

The Barunga West Council is delighted to announce that the long-awaited upgrade of Edmund Street in Port Broughton has been completed, reaching a critical milestone this month with the permanent sealing of the road.

The Council had approved this road upgrade in October 2021, following persistent concerns raised by local residents.
The upgrade has come as a much-needed relief for many residents who frequently use the road and footpath facilities, and who had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the poor condition of this essential community artery.

The issue was first highlighted in 2020, leading to Chief Executive Maree Wauchope and Manager of Assets and Infrastructure Steve Davey meeting with residents from aged care facility Barunga Village, which is located at 11 Edmund Street. The condition of the road was particularly distressing for those residents reliant on mobility aids such as walkers, wheelchairs, and gophers.

“The residents have been using the road to travel to the park at the end of Edmund Street. Because of the poor condition of the surface, it was quite unpleasant for residents who use mobility aids,” Ms Wauchope said.

The Edmund Street upgrade project extends beyond road improvements, enhancing the experience for patrons of the nearby Port Broughton Bowling Club and visitors and residents to and from Barunga Village.

“Works involved sealing and widening the existing footpath on the southern side of the road. We also extended the footpath to the entrance of the gardens at the end of Edmund Street and installed appropriate street lighting,” Ms Wauchope said. “The road has now been repaired, resealed, and we will be adding a safe crossing to and from Barunga Village and the Bowling Club.”

The project was included in the 2021/22 Annual Business Plan, and has been successfully completed for around $200,000.
“Council is committed to continual improvements in public infrastructure, ensuring a safer and more comfortable environment for all residents and visitors,” Ms Wauchope said.
