The draft Library Strategy 2024-2026 seeks to transform the Bute and Port Broughton libraries into more vibrant community hubs, with a focus on accessibility, community engagement, and service improvements.
The strategy sets out a clear vision for the future of library services in the region. It highlights several key areas for development, including an upgrade of the Bute Library and an increased promotional push to raise awareness of library services in both Port Broughton and Bute.
Key Strategic Priorities:
- Bute Library Revitalisation: The Bute Library is set to receive much-needed upgrades to improve its functionality and appeal. As part of the draft plan, options are being considered to relocate the library to a more central and welcoming space. Other proposals include enhancing the library's physical environment, adding modern amenities, and increasing accessibility through extended hours or potentially a 24/7 service model.
- Increased Awareness and Engagement: One of the central goals of the strategy is to boost the profile of both libraries. A targeted promotional campaign will be rolled out to raise awareness of the library services, including installing new signage, distributing promotional materials across the region, and running social media campaigns.
“The Bute and Port Broughton libraries are underutilised community assets,” said Acting Council CEO Steve Davey. “This plan aims to change that by ensuring more residents are aware of the services on offer.” - Community Consultation and Involvement: Recognising the importance of public input, Council will be seeking feedback from residents on the draft action plan before making any financial commitments.
“Libraries are for everyone, and we want to make sure that the community's voice is reflected in this strategy,” Mr Davey said. “The consultation process will inform the Council’s final decisions, particularly regarding the allocation of resources and any proposed changes to opening hours, such as extending service during lunchtime at the Port Broughton Community Library.” - Modernising Library Spaces and Services: The strategy includes modernisation efforts at both libraries. This includes plans to increase digital literacy support, expand the availability of eBooks and audiobooks, and offer community programs like author events and workshops. Plans to enhance physical spaces, such as creating comfortable reading corners, and offering tea and coffee facilities, are also proposed.
“Our libraries are not just about books; they are community hubs that can offer so much more,” Mr Davey said.
Financial Considerations and Timeline:
While the strategy outlines a bold vision for the future of the libraries, financial commitments will be deferred until the 2025-26 budget deliberations. Council is mindful of the need to balance community expectations with responsible budgeting, especially given the scope of the improvements proposed.
Council has stated that the initial costs related to community consultation and promotional efforts will be absorbed within existing budgets.
However, significant capital expenditure, such as building upgrades or the introduction of new technologies, will be considered as part of future budget discussions.
Next Steps and How to Get Involved:
Council is encouraging all residents to provide feedback on the draft Library Strategy. Public consultation is set to run until 25 October 2024 via written submissions.
The draft Library Action Plan can be viewed on Council’s website or at the Council offices in Port Broughton and Bute. Printed copies will also be available at the libraries and other community locations.
“We want to hear from as many residents as possible,” Mr Davey said. “This strategy is designed to serve the entire community, so your input is essential in helping us shape the future of our library services.”
