Council to Relocate Community Pantry

Barunga West Council has resolved to relocate the Port Broughton Community Pantry to a shaded or indoor location to improve food safety and accessibility for those in need.

The Council decision, made at its February 11 meeting, follows feedback from the community and staff, highlighting concerns about heat exposure, food quality, and privacy at the current site behind the Council office on Harvey Street.

Mayor Leonie Kerley said the relocation aims to enhance the pantry’s effectiveness in supporting residents facing food insecurity.

“The Community Pantry plays an essential role in helping vulnerable residents access food and essential items, particularly as the cost of living continues to rise,” Mayor Kerley said. “Council is committed to ensuring it remains a welcoming, safe, and accessible resource.”

A recent survey found that while 73 per cent of community respondents found the current location convenient, many expressed concerns about food safety in warm weather and the need for increased awareness of the pantry's availability.

Staff also noted that some residents were hesitant to access the pantry due to its visibility near Council workspaces. The Council has instructed staff to:

  • Investigate alternative shaded or indoor locations, such as near the Op Shop or Uniting Church.
  • Increase community awareness through partnerships and advertising.
  • Conduct annual reviews to monitor usage and address emerging needs.

The pantry, originally established through a community-led initiative with Council support, provides essential items such as non-perishable food, toiletries, and school snacks. Donations from the community help keep it stocked for those in need.

Council will consult with local organisations before finalising a new location. Residents are encouraged to continue using and donating to the pantry at its current location.
