Council Reinstates Community Grants Scheme

Published 10th September 2025
Barunga West Council will reinstate its popular Community Grants Scheme with a $40,000 allocation in the 2025-26 financial year, following strong community feedback about the program’s importance.

The decision, made at last night’s Council meeting, restores a long-standing initiative that has delivered more than $350,000 in direct financial support to 97 community projects over the past decade. Community groups at the Top of the Yorke have also contributed an estimated $200,000 in matching and in-kind support, highlighting how small grants can often unlock significant volunteer effort and partner investment.

Barunga West Mayor Leonie Kerley said reinstating the scheme recognised the value it provides to local organisations.

“In response to community feedback, Council has asked the CEO to reinstate Community Grants in this year’s budget and into future budgets through the Long-Term Financial Plan,” Mayor Kerley said.

The scheme will open for applications later this month, with Council staff working closely with community groups to help them develop strong submissions.

Since its inception, the Community Grants Scheme has funded a diverse range of projects, from infrastructure upgrades at sporting and service clubs to sponsorship of major community events. Examples include:

  • Thomas Plains Tennis Club – $11,550 for clubroom repairs.
  • Kulpara Progress Association – $10,000 for toilet block upgrades to support RV and grey nomad tourism.
  • Port Broughton Community Church – $5,000 for a Raizer Lifting Chair to assist ambulance volunteers.
  • Port Broughton RSL – $3,000 for snooker table refurbishment.
  • Bute RSL – $5,000 for new carpeting.
  • Seafood on Spencer Festival and the Port Broughton Country Music Festival – community event sponsorship.
  • Alford Tennis Club – $1,049.85 for replacement court nets.

Mayor Kerley said the program demonstrated how modest Council investment could deliver visible results.

“These grants empower volunteers, foster inclusion, and provide tangible improvements residents can see and use; from new equipment and building upgrades to community events that attract visitors and support local businesses,” she said.

The reinstated scheme will again be open to a wide range of applicants including sporting clubs, service organisations, cultural groups and event organisers.
