Council launches AI community assistant

Barunga West Council is trialling a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool to help residents quickly and accurately find answers to common questions about council services.

The AI assistant, now live on Council’s website, can respond instantly to queries such as rubbish collection days, off-leash dog areas, burning permits, development approvals, and rates payment dates.

Barunga West CEO Maree Wauchope said the technology is designed to make information more accessible for the community.

“We know people want answers at their fingertips. This tool will make it easier for residents to find clear and reliable information about council services, any time of the day or night,” Ms Wauchope said. “AI is here to stay and we need to embrace it and use it to deliver better service for our community.”

The AI assistant is still in its early stages and will become more accurate and useful as more information is added. Council staff will also help train the tool, ensuring answers are tailored to local needs and backed by up-to-date policies and legislation.

Ms Wauchope said the initiative is not only a benefit for residents, but also for staff.

“By linking the assistant to planning and legislative systems, staff will be able to access information themselves when responding to enquiries, rather than needing to pass questions on,” Ms Wauchope said. “This means a faster, more consistent service for our community and less duplication of effort behind the scenes.”

The introduction of the AI assistant reflects Council’s commitment to innovation and improved customer service. The tool will continue to be developed over the coming months, with feedback from staff and residents playing a key role in shaping its capabilities.
