Following a Strategic Planning workshop earlier this year, the Council has decided to hold an Ordinary Council Meeting at the Port Broughton Area School, aiming to engage younger members of the community in the workings of local government.
Mayor Leonie Kerley, alongside CEO Maree Wauchope, recently met with the Principal of Port Broughton Area School and the Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) Teacher to discuss this innovative initiative.
During this meeting, it was agreed that students would be challenged to identify and present an issue within the local community that they believe warrants the Council's attention. This initiative is designed to encourage students to think critically about the issues that impact their daily lives and understand the significant role local government plays in addressing these concerns.
As part of this exercise, up to three student delegations may have the opportunity to present their findings and proposals directly to the Councillors. This hands-on experience aims to spark interest in civic engagement and leadership among the youth, ensuring that the future leaders of Barunga West are informed, involved, and ready to make a difference.
Next month’s meeting will be held at the Port Broughton Area School on 10 September 2024, from 1:30pm onwards.
Mayor Kerley expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative.
"This is an exciting opportunity for our young people to become involved in local government and have their voices heard. We hope this experience will inspire them to become active participants in our community's future."
The Council is committed to fostering a sense of civic responsibility and leadership among young people, and this initiative marks an important step towards building a stronger, more engaged community.
