At its meeting on May 13, Council endorsed a motion introducing financial incentives for businesses investing in the recently marketed industrial allotments.
Under this Employment Zone Incentive Scheme, businesses purchasing land and demonstrating measurable job creation and economic benefits will be eligible for reimbursements of council fees and general rate rebates for up to five years.
Council Interim CEO Paul Simpson said the scheme was specifically designed to encourage the uptake and rapid development of these strategically positioned parcels of land.
“The scheme reflects Council’s proactive stance on economic development by directly supporting businesses that commit to creating jobs and boosting local economic activity,” Mr Simpson said.
The land parcels, varying from 2,500m² to 18,325m², were relaunched onto the market earlier this year with revised pricing and enhanced infrastructure, including heavy vehicle-compatible roads, boundary fencing, and clear land delineation.
Mayor Leonie Kerley said that this incentive was essential in addressing the historic undersupply of industrial land in the region.
“This is a strategic decision to stimulate local investment and employment,” Mayor Kerley said. "By offsetting some initial costs, we expect this will generate substantial long-term benefits for Port Broughton and the broader Barunga West community.”
Businesses interested in applying for the incentives must submit formal proposals detailing their planned developments and projected employment outcomes.
Each application will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by council administration to ensure alignment with Barunga West's strategic economic goals.
“If business owners enquire about the properties through our agent, Broughton Realty, we will provide feedback prior to purchase as to the incentive that is available, and we are willing to provide written undertakings as to those benefits prior to the finalisation of the sales contract,” Mr Simpson said.
The industrial precinct at Hornby Road has already attracted significant interest, thanks in part to its prime location near Port Broughton township, positioned conveniently between Adelaide and Port Pirie.
Mr Simpson said: “We want businesses and developers to know that Barunga West Council is open for business and we are really well placed to support that development.”
Council’s decision builds upon a broader commitment to sustainable and responsible regional growth, reinforcing its dedication to creating a robust local economy with stable job opportunities for current and future residents.
