The $5000 grant will enable Port Broughton Uniting Church, which has raised an additional $1800, to purchase a Raizer Lifting Chair and ease pressure on the state's ambulance service.
The chair will be used by Port Broughton SA Ambulance Service volunteers, who can be first on the scene when someone falls seriously ill or has a nasty fall, and means there will be less need for a long wait for an ambulance to arrive from another location.
The Raizer lifting chair enables a solo responder to safely lift from the floor to a sitting or almost standing position a patient weighing up to 158 kilograms in a dignified way that supports the entire body.
The chair can help get a person up again after they have fallen on the floor due to mobility issues, cardiac arrest, diabetic emergency, falling unconscious, breathing difficulties or following a seizure.
Funding for this vital piece of healthcare equipment has come from Barunga West Council’s annual Community Grant Scheme.
Almost $34,000 worth of community grants have been awarded to 10 organisations this financial year by Barunga West Council.
A further $6000 under Council’s Community Grant Scheme has been allocated for distribution to those who wish to undertake childcare provider education and training, and set up a family day-care service in the Barunga West region.
Under the scheme, individual grants are capped at $10,000, with grants of more than $5000 requiring the recipient to match Council’s contribution.
Other grant recipients for 2022-23 include the Port Broughton Golf Club ($5000); Broughton Mundoora Football Club ($2296); Bute Gunner Bills Heritage Centre ($4591); Port Broughton Community Workshop ($3500); Broughton Mundoora Netball Club ($2200); Port Broughton Combined Sporting Club ($4442); Port Broughton Echo ($1000); and Bute Soldiers’ Memorial Hall ($969).
Barunga West Council also will renew its sponsorship of Port Broughton’s popular Seafood on Spencer festival, scheduled for 25 March 2023, through cash and in-kind support of $5000 under the Community Grant Scheme.
Maree Wauchope, Chief Executive Officer, of Barunga West Council said the grant scheme provided a wonderful opportunity for local organisations to develop projects, programs and activities related to recreation, culture, the environment, community, social development and welfare.
“Council received 10 applications in August for this year’s grant scheme and not one missed out,” Ms Wauchope said.
“It is pleasing that Council is able to assist a wide range of community organisations to deliver projects that are important to our ratepayers.
“This year’s scheme also provides for Council to assist locals wishing to open a family day care service at their home, as we continue to strongly lobby for the establishment of a Childcare Centre at the Top of the Yorke, based in Port Broughton.”
