Community-led Pantry to Fight Food Insecurity

Barunga West Council welcomes the opening of a Community Pantry on Harvey Street in Port Broughton as an important initiative aimed at combating food insecurity on Yorke Peninsula.

Located on the external wall of the Council and Police building in the centre of Port Broughton, this project has been developed by local community members and churches, with strong support from the Council.

The Pantry is stocked with food and essential items donated by community members, providing critical support for those facing food insecurity.

Barunga West Mayor Leonie Kerley said the Community Pantry initiative aimed to ensure everyone in the region had access to basic necessities.

“Community pantries play a crucial role in ensuring that vulnerable individuals can access nutritious food. They provide essential support for families in crisis and help strengthen community bonds by offering a way for people to assist one another,” Mayor Kerley said.

“As living costs continue to rise, the pressures on families and individuals in our communities can become overwhelming. This food pantry is available to anyone in need; there's no need to ask — just come and take what you require, knowing that your community is here to support you. This is another example of how Council is collaborating with our community to create a better future for everyone."

Those in need are welcome to take what they require from the pantry, but we kindly ask that they only take what they need to help as many people as possible.

For those interested in contributing, donations of cereal, long-life milk, tuna, school snacks, canned foods (including beans, spaghetti, meals), pasta and pasta sauce, tinned fruit and vegetables, and toiletries (including unopened personal hygiene and sanitary products and toilet paper) are greatly appreciated.

Donations can be placed directly into the pantry or brought to the Council office.
