The Civic Square redevelopment aims to preserve and enhance the existing Port Broughton War Memorial by creating a distinct and dedicated space. This space will be separate from the water play area and will feature three flagpoles behind the soldier statue, as well as a semi-circular memorial wall.
In consultation with the RSL and its Port Broughton members, it was strongly felt that the only inscription appropriate for the memorial wall should be "Lest We Forget". Council staff have developed an initial concept of how this significant phrase would look on the wall, and they will work closely with the RSL to finalise the design.
Barunga West CEO Maree Wauchope said it was pleasing Council and the RSL had worked so well together to create a special place of remembrance.
“Memorials dedicated to the war dead serve as places of remembrance for those who lost loved ones and have no grave to visit. They also engage the wider population with the events that have significantly shaped our lives today,” Ms Wauchope said.
“These memorials play a crucial role in commemorating the war dead and offering a space for reflection. They provide a way to honour those who lost their lives during WWI and WWII, especially those with no known grave or who cannot be commemorated at their burial sites.”
To adhere to proper protocol for flying the Australian National Flag alongside State and other flags, new flagpoles have been installed in a row at equal height. The Australian National Flag will always be flown on the far-left position, which is regarded as the position of honour.
In addition to these enhancements, the soldier statue is being cleaned, and the lettering on its four faces is being renewed with the RSL’s support and approval. The RSL has also contributed $300 towards this improvement. The concrete base of the statue has now been rendered.
The re-lettering is expected to cost $660, while the inscription is expected to cost approximately $1,000. Both expenses can be accommodated within the Council’s budget.
This collaborative effort demonstrates the strong relationship between Barunga West Council and the RSL, ensuring that the sacrifices of our war veterans are respectfully commemorated and remembered by the community.
