The project has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Infrastructure Delivery Award category for projects under $2 million, recognising outstanding achievement in the successful delivery of infrastructure projects that provide meaningful and lasting benefits to local communities.
Completed in October 2024, the Port Broughton Civic Square Redevelopment transformed a prominent town centre space into a modern, family-friendly community hub designed to support tourism, recreation and community connection.
The redevelopment included the construction of a splashpad waterplay area featuring water jets and lighting, creating a modern and safe “blue space” for families during the warmer months. Operating daily throughout summer from 7am to 10pm, the splashpad has become a popular attraction for both local residents and visitors to the Yorke Peninsula region.
The project also delivered significant upgrades to the Port Broughton War Memorial precinct, including improved seating, three flag poles and a semi-circular memorial wall designed for commemorative plaques.
Cultural elements were incorporated throughout the redevelopment, including Narungga artwork and the inclusion of Narungga language within the public space, recognising and celebrating the area’s Indigenous heritage.
Additional landscaping works included the planting of native, drought-tolerant vegetation, improved pedestrian connectivity and the installation of additional public seating areas.
Barunga West Council Mayor Leonie Kerley said the recognition reflected the significance of the redevelopment for the local community and the broader region.
“The Port Broughton Civic Square Redevelopment has delivered a modern public space that is being embraced by residents, families and visitors,” Mayor Kerley said.
“This was the largest public domain construction project undertaken by Council and it has created an important focal point for the region, supporting community events, tourism and everyday use.
“The inclusion of cultural elements, upgraded memorial infrastructure and family-friendly amenities has helped create a space that reflects both the identity and future of our community.
“It is very pleasing to see the project recognised at a state level alongside a strong field of finalists from across South Australia.”
Barunga West Council is one of four finalists in the category alongside:
- Whyalla City Council: Civic Park Play Space Project
- District Council of Yankalilla: Range Road Reconstruction
- City of Adelaide: Vincent Street/Vincent Place Transformation
Award winners will be announced at the Local Government Professionals SA Leadership Excellence Awards Gala Dinner on Friday, 22 May 2026.
