Beach Ready for Easter Weekend

As part of Barunga West Council’s commitment to preserving its coastline, a major round of sand replenishment has been successfully completed ahead of schedule, ensuring Port Broughton’s popular beach is in prime condition for the upcoming Easter long weekend.

Since Thursday, 21 March, approximately 600 cubic metres of sand has been spread across the northern and southern sections of the beach parallel to West Terrace, marking the first of three major replenishments scheduled for this year. The sand, sourced locally to ensure compatibility with the existing beach environment, has been carted and spread by Aitchison’s Earthmoving, a Port Broughton company contracted over the project's three-year duration.

This effort is part of a larger, comprehensive strategy funded by the Coastal Protection Board and spearheaded by Council. The Port Broughton Sand Replenishment Program, which commenced in March 2023 following a successful pilot study in July 2022, targets four key beach areas for annual sand replenishment until 2025. These areas include the vicinity adjacent to the Port Broughton Tourist Park, Dalling Street, West Terrace, and John Lewis Drive. The process moves sand with tides into vegetation, forming a barrier that reduces coastal erosion.

This important initiative is aimed at combating coastal erosion and enhancing beach amenity.

Barunga West Council Mayor Leonie Kerley said the timing of the latest sand replenishment works was perfect, with Easter long weekend temperatures forecast to be 30C and above.

“This is a significant milestone for Council in the delivery of these important sand replenishment works, enabling us to restore the beach and the protection it provides to our pristine coastline at the Top of the Yorke,” Mayor Kerley said.

“This vital work ensures the protection and enjoyment of Port Broughton's beautiful coastline for everyone, especially at this time of year when we have popular events such as Feast on the Foreshore on Good Friday, and our Port Broughton Easter Seaside Markets on Saturday. We remain committed to enhancing our beaches for both residents and visitors.”

The next phase of replenishment is set for May 2024, focusing on Dalling Street and Port Broughton Tourist Park beaches, with plans to distribute an additional 600 and 400 cubic metres of sand, respectively. John Lewis Drive is scheduled to receive 100 cubic metres of sand in June.
