The decision, carried unanimously at the April Council meeting, is aimed at bringing communities together in a shared celebration of local achievement, citizenship, and community pride.
From 2026 onwards, the official Barunga West Council Australia Day Awards — including Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and Community Event of the Year — will be presented at this central Council-organised event.
Mayor Leonie Kerley said the revised policy reflects a growing desire to unite rather than divide communities within the district.
“We are a small Council area, and like many other similar-sized councils across South Australia, we believe a single event allows us to create a stronger sense of community. This is not about taking anything away — it’s about bringing people together,” she said.
Mayor Kerley was also clear that the decision does not prevent any towns in the Barunga West Council area from organising their own local celebrations.
“If the Bute community or other towns wish to run their own events, they are absolutely welcome to do so. The change simply means Council won’t be running or funding multiple events — we’re focusing our resources on delivering one inclusive, well-organised event that everyone can be proud of,” she said.
The updated Australia Day Policy was developed with input from elected members, community representatives and staff, and incorporates best-practice guidance from the Australia Day Council of South Australia.
The Port Broughton ceremony will continue to feature award presentations, a citizenship ceremony, community entertainment and recognition of the region’s volunteers and contributors. Award nominations will remain open to residents from across the entire Council area, including Alford, Bute, Clements Gap, Fisherman Bay, Kulpara, Melton, Mundoora, Ninnes, Port Broughton, South Hummocks, Thomas Plains, Tickera, Ward Hill, Willamulka, and Wokurna. The selection process will remain fair, transparent and inclusive.
“This is about celebrating who we are as one community,” Mayor Kerley said. “We encourage everyone, regardless of which town you live in, to get involved and be part of a day that belongs to all of us.”
