Barunga West Offers New Volunteer Opportunities

Barunga West Council has been approved by the Australian Government as a voluntary work organisation, presenting new opportunities for job seekers in the community.

This approval means that job seekers receiving payments from Centrelink can now fulfill their mutual obligation requirements by engaging in voluntary work with the Council.

CEO of Barunga West Council, Maree Wauchope, said the initiative was a positive one both for Council and the community.

“This is a significant step forward for our community and offers a win-win opportunity for both job seekers and the Council,” Ms Wauchope said. “By participating in volunteer work, job seekers can gain invaluable experience and skills, while actively contributing to the development and beautification of our community."

Council is offering volunteer positions in various areas, including the Port Broughton Visitor Information Outlet, local Council-run events, Gallery 1871, and Community Parks and Gardens.

These roles are designed not only to help job seekers meet their Centrelink obligations but also to enrich their community involvement and personal growth.

Job seekers interested in these opportunities must complete several steps to be eligible, including registering as a Council volunteer, possibly providing a police check, completing health and safety inductions, and signing Council’s Code of Conduct.

"Ensuring the safety and well-being of both our volunteers and community members is paramount, and these steps are crucial in maintaining our standards of excellence," Ms Wauchope said.

All volunteers will be covered by Council's insurance once they complete the necessary training and induction processes, ensuring that they are fully supported in their roles.

"We are excited to see the positive impact this program will have on our community and encourage all eligible job seekers to apply. It’s a unique chance to make a meaningful difference while gaining practical experience,” Ms Wauchope said.
