This comprehensive plan, set to run to July 2026, aims to provide vital support to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity within the Barunga West area.
As part of the plan, emergency pre-paid food vouchers are now available from key local points, including the Port Broughton Area School, the Port Broughton Uniting Church, and the Port Broughton Op Shop. The vouchers, which can be redeemed at the Port Broughton IGA, offer immediate relief to those facing a food crisis.
Council has committed $5,000 towards this initiative over the next two years, with the Port Broughton IGA contributing an additional $1,000 for the current financial year.
Eligible individuals and families can access vouchers valued at either $20 or $50, depending on their needs, up to 10 times per year. Vouchers are available once a fortnight, providing ongoing support for the community.
“The Barunga West Food Assistance Plan is a valuable resource for those facing financial pressures,” said Barunga West Council Acting CEO Steve Davey.
“While it's not a complete solution, this collaborative effort offers practical support to help ease the burden of food insecurity for those in our community.”
The Barunga West Food Assistance Plan includes broader goals, such as the establishment of a community pantry and potential weekly hot meal services, as outlined in the comprehensive plan available on the Council's website.
