Barunga West Council Boosts Christmas Spirit

Barunga West Council has approved key motions to enhance the summer holidays spirit in Port Broughton, with plans for improved Christmas decorations and the continuation of the popular New Year’s Eve celebration.

At its recent meeting, councillors allocated $10,000 in the 2025/26 draft budget for Christmas decorations to boost the festive appeal of Port Broughton’s main street. This decision follows community feedback calling for a stronger festive presence during the holiday season.

Interim CEO Paul Simpson said the initiative will enhance community pride and attract even more visitors to the region.

“Christmas is a time for families and the community to come together,” Mr Simpson said. “By investing in new and fun decorations, we are responding to community expectations and creating a festive atmosphere that showcases Port Broughton as a premier destination during the holiday season.”

The funding will be used to deliver visually engaging decorations that align with the town’s vibrant character. This builds on previous investments, including the installation of a 5.8m Christmas tree and solar-powered star lights. Council staff will explore decorative options and seek further endorsement to ensure timely delivery and high-quality installations.

Council also approved plans to continue its highly successful New Year’s Eve celebration, following the overwhelming popularity of the 2024 event. More than 2,000 people gathered at the Port Broughton foreshore to enjoy an evening of food and entertainment, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at 9:30pm.

“The New Year’s Eve celebration is one of our community’s most beloved events, and it’s wonderful to see it grow each year,” Mr Simpson said. “The positive feedback and large turnout reflect its value to our residents and visitors.”

The 2024 event featured four food trucks offering a variety of treats, which received glowing feedback from attendees.

Local emergency services and volunteers, including the Port Pirie and Crystal Brook Police, Port Broughton Ambulance, and Port Broughton CFS, played a crucial role in ensuring the event ran smoothly.

Preparations are already underway for the 2025 event, with the fireworks contractor tentatively re-booked. The estimated cost for next year’s celebration is $22,000, reflecting the Council’s commitment to providing a memorable experience for the community and visitors.

“These initiatives not only bring joy to our community but also promote Port Broughton as a vibrant hub for tourism and economic activity,” Mr Simpson said.
