On 7 September 2023, Ms Wauchope will be in Canberra to address the Australian Local Government Association’s (ALGA) National Local Roads, Transport and Infrastructure Conference. Her presentation will examine challenges of delivering affordable housing infrastructure. Following her speech, she will join a panel discussion on this pressing issue that resonates with local governments nationwide.
With the event coinciding with a parliamentary sitting week, Ms Wauchope has a prime opportunity for engagement with federal MPs and key decision-makers. This will further her advocacy for enhanced regional recognition and increased financial support for infrastructure.
This invitation follows significant media attention and Ministerial acknowledgements the Council received over the Fisherman Bay Freeholding process and its recent rezoning initiatives.
As regional South Australia attracts more people in search of affordable housing, Barunga West plans to offer up to 300 affordable housing blocks over the next few years. The Council anticipates that this initiative, in tandem with an innovative rates rebate scheme for first-time homeowners, will draw more people to the area.
“This invitation is more than just an honour for our CEO,” said Barunga West Council Mayor Leonie Kerley. “It's a testament to the positive changes and strategic impact that even a small regional council in South Australia can have. Our initiatives not only spotlight Barunga West and the Top of the Yorke, but they also champion the power of robust regional leadership."
During the Day 2 session of the conference, held in the Kambri Cultural Centre at the Australian National University, Ms Wauchope will be joined by Robyn Briese, Deputy General Counsel – Government at the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation, and Councillor Matthew Deeth, Deputy Mayor of Wollondilly Shire Council in Sydney's outer south-west.
The 2023 ALGA Conference is themed, “Building Communities that are safer, stronger, smarter”. This annual gathering, championed by ALGA—the voice for Australia's 537 councils—aims to highlight successful projects from various councils while fostering meaningful discussions with federal agencies.
Ms Wauchope, since her appointment as CEO in April 2020, has been instrumental in advancing Barunga West Council’s regional vision. With an impressive tenure in leadership, especially within the State Government’s public sector, Ms Wauchope has consistently advocated for infrastructure development, tourism, and the overall visitor economy.
Her extensive experience spans two decades in the South Australian public sector and consultancy roles focused on planning, transport, infrastructure, and community development.
A proud Yorke Peninsula resident and an ardent supporter of the region, Ms Wauchope’s aspirations align with ensuring the area remains a vibrant hub for residents and visitors.
“Council’s initiatives have put Barunga West ‘on the map’. My presentation will not only illuminate the challenges but also highlight the strategic pathways small councils like Barunga West are paving in their regions,” Ms Wauchope said.
