Outstanding local individuals and groups will be formally recognised and awarded at the 2023 Barunga West Council Australia Day Awards on January 26.

Australia Day Awards reward and recognise individuals and groups that have made a noteworthy contribution during the year, and/or give outstanding service over a number of years, to a local community over and above the normal employment duties.

Recipients must be a resident of Barunga West Council and one whose achievements in service for others has had a significant influence in the local community or have made an outstanding achievement in an appropriate field of endeavour.

Mayor of Barunga West Council, Leonie Kerley, said the annual Australia Day Awards were a great opportunity to honour the Top of the Yorke’s committed individuals and groups.

The following residents and volunteer groups have been selected as 2023 recipients:

  • Australia Day Citizen of the Year award for Port Broughton and surrounds – Judy Coad for her dedication over many decades as a volunteer for many initiatives and programs involving both the Fisherman Bay and Port Broughton communities.
  • Australia Day Event of the Year award for Port Broughton and surrounds – Mundoora Progress Association’s Mud and Dust Vintage Tractor Pull, which was an inaugural event bringing thousands of visitors to Mundoora and the region.
  • Australia Day Citizen of the Year award for Bute and surrounds – Allan Axford, who is a life time contributor to Bute, and a reliable and generous volunteer to many organisations.
  • Australia Day Event of the Year award for Bute and surrounds – Bute Corner Store Morning Tea, which raised $3,000 for the Greenhill Lodge on Greenhill Road, Adelaide.
  • Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service – Members of the local CFS group servicing Barunga West for supporting others in their time of need.

Mayor Kerley congratulates all winners and those who were nominated for awards.

‘We are privileged and proud to have so many hard working and generous citizens as members of our community,” Mayor Kerley said.

Australia Day ceremonies will be at Bute Soldiers’ Memorial Hall and Port Broughton Foreshore.
