Local Government Elections are fast approaching and Barunga West Council is encouraging eligible community members to step up for the chance to represent the region.
There are nine councillor vacancies in Barunga West Council and nominations are open from 9am 23 August to 12 noon on 6 September.
Maree Wauchope Chief Executive said I’m encouraging people to get in touch and find out more about what it takes to be a Councillor.
“Barunga West ratepayers will have the opportunity to elect 9 Elected Members to represent their interests and needs. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be chosen by those Elected Members.
“Being a Councillor isn’t a full-time job but it will mean attending meetings and information sessions held out of normal business hours.
“Councillors are also required to attend committees or serve on external committees as a representative,” she said.
In previous terms of Council, meetings have been held from 6pm every second Tuesday of each month and are live streamed to the general public. Councillors are elected for a four year term and once elected you are a public officer and this means you must act on behalf of your community, and not your own personal interests.
“The role of councillor is a rewarding one, but candidates need to be aware of the responsibility and time commitment required in taking on the role of a Councillor,” Maree said.
There are a number of criteria to meet, which are detailed nomination kit at www.councilelections.sa.gov.au
Candidate information sessions will be held for interested residents to learn and prepare for what is involved in becoming a Council member prior to nominating.
Information sessions will be held at the following locations:
1. Council Chambers at Port Broughton, 16 August at 6pm
2. Bute Soldiers Memorial Hall, 17 August at 6pm Ratepayers will be posted voting packs in late October – these will need to be returned using the postage paid envelope supplied before 10 November 2022.
