Maree Wauchope Returns from Extended Leave

Published 15th July 2025
Barunga West Council is pleased to announce the return of Chief Executive Officer Maree Wauchope, effective Monday, August 4, 2025, following a period of extended leave.

Ms Wauchope took leave last year to undergo preventative treatment for melanoma and has successfully completed her treatment.

Mayor Leonie Kerley welcomed Ms Wauchope’s return, highlighting the strength and stability she brings to Council.

“We are delighted to have Maree back at the helm after this challenging period,” Mayor Kerley said. “Maree's leadership, vision and dedication have been greatly missed, and we are very pleased to see her return in good health.

“Council thanks Interim CEO Paul Simpson for stepping in so effectively during Maree’s absence and ensuring continuity of leadership, vision and dedication.”

Ms Wauchope said she was very grateful for the support she received.

“I’m so thankful for the support from Council during my preventative treatment. It’s great to be back, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead with the team after what’s been a challenging time for some of us,” Ms Wauchope said.

She also used the opportunity of announcing her return to Council to advocate for increased awareness and prevention of melanoma.

“I’d encourage everyone to get their skin checked regularly by a dermatologist or skin clinic, even if you think you haven’t had much sun exposure,” Ms Wauchope said. “Melanoma is a cunning disease, and early detection really does save lives.”

Paul Simpson stepped in as Interim CEO on January 13, 2025. During the past six months he has provided steady leadership, supported key projects, and strengthened Council’s connection with the community and staff.

“I have genuinely enjoyed working with the chamber, the amazing staff, and this wonderful community,” Mr Simpson said. “It’s been a rewarding experience, and I’m glad I could contribute positively during this interim period.”

Ms Wauchope resumes her responsibilities next month, continuing to build on the strong foundations and progress established by the Council during her absence.
