The Mayor and Councillors have undertaken three modules of Mandatory Training which include, Introduction to Local Government, Legal Responsibilities, and Council and Committee Meetings. A joint training session at Balaklava with Wakefield Regional meant that training costs were halved. Training of Mayors will be undertaken in Adelaide.

The Drought Communities Program is a Commonwealth grant program intended to support regional communities facing hardship arising from drought. As a result of the recent Drought Summit in Canberra, 17 South Australian Councils have now been included as part of this program, including Barunga West Council. The grant program will fund projects that provide local  employment and keep money flowing through the local region. We are working with the Department of Infrastructure in Canberra to ensure that identified projects are completed before the end of June next year.

The new swimming pontoon has been installed at the jetty T-piece in readiness for summer.

You might have already seen the new Welcome to Barunga West signs which have recently been installed. Reflective paint will ensure they are visible at night.

Congratulations to Tickera & Community Recreation Association on the impressive new town entrance sign. If you haven’t seen it yet, pop on down to Tickera and have a look.

Volunteers are the driving force in our communities and I congratulate Bill Trengove on his life membership of the Bute Tennis Club and Sally Paterson on her life membership of the Bute Sporting Club.

Good luck to Scarlett & Fergus Tod who will be spending a year overseas, Scarlett in Brazil and Fergus in Finland, as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange.

Harvest has had varying results in Barunga West Council with some good yields and some crops being affected by lack of rain and frost.  Ever resourceful, farmers have been baling their affected crops. Hay will be in huge demand as a result of the disastrous drought affecting much of Australia.

I acknowledge the dedication of Cynthia Axford and the previous Councillors. Cynthia served eight years on Barunga West Council, four of those as Mayor. Cynthia represented council in a most professional manner and was highly respected within Barunga West Council and throughout South Australia while undertaking her duties.

Christmas is upon us again and I wish everyone a safe and peaceful festive season.

Leonie Kerley

Mayor, Barunga West Council
